Sun Dried Tomatoes

For a miniature sun in your plate, just add one of our organic sun dried tomatoes.

  • Our sun dried tomatoes are cultivated in Turkey and are obtained from the large and pear-shaped Rio Grande variety of tomatoes. Ripe fresh tomatoes are harvested in the summer months. They are washed, sliced in half and dipped in a salt solution before being laid on clean cloth to dry in the sun. After four days of drying, the tomato halves are turned over so that the other half can dry evenly for another four days.
  • We offer two varieties of sun dried tomatoes: the traditional variety, which has a moisture level of 18%, and the ready to eat variety, which is prepared by blanching the traditional variety and which has a moisture level of 40%.
  • Benefits of Sun Dried Tomatoes
  • Tomatoes are a particularly good source of lycopene, a compound which gives tomatoes their red color. Lycopene belongs to the group of phytonutrients called carotenoids, which are responsible for the bright yellow, orange and red colors found in many fruits and vegetables. Like other carotenoids, lycopene acts as an antioxidant in the human body by eliminating free radicals, which are highly reactive atoms that can damage cells by reacting with other molecules. As such, it can help prevent the onset of diseases linked to oxidative stress such as cancer and cardiovascular disease. Research suggests that lycopene may have even more benefits than other carotenoids by also acting as an anti-inflammatory and cholesterol-reducing agent, and by protecting the skin from damage caused by sun exposure.
  • Tomatoes are also an excellent source of vitamin C, which needs to be supplied by the diet as the human body is unable to synthesize it. Not only is vitamin C a powerful antioxidant in itself, it also stimulates the regeneration of other antioxidants in the body such as vitamin E. Vitamin C is essential for immune system function, which is why high doses of vitamin C are recommended for people suffering from the cold or flu in order to prevent complications.
  • Uses of Sun Dried Tomatoes
  • Sun dried and traditional tomatoes need to be reconstituted before being eaten. Simply soaking them in warm water for 30 minutes until they become soft will suffice. Ready to eat tomatoes, on the other hand, can be enjoyed straight out of the jar.
  • Sun dried tomatoes are a welcome addition to any dish that calls for an intense tomato flavor and chewy texture. They make a delectable topping for salads, pasta and pizza. Their taste, which is a combination of sweetness and tartness, pairs exceptionally well with that of cheese. They can be added to goat cheese to enliven a breakfast sandwich or omelet, or to mozzarella for a bright and delicious appetizer platter. Finally, they can also be chopped and added to baked goods such as bread, or simmered with other vegetables for a succulent stew.

Did You Know?

To improve the absorption of lycopene, the star antioxidant in tomatoes, it is best to consume tomatoes with fat. Since lycopene is fat-soluble, it is more readily available to the body when mixed with fatty substances.

Combining tomatoes with extra virgin olive oil is both a flavorsome and a wholesome way to reap the health benefits of lycopene.
